Dunedin Hospital evacuated (+ video)

A partial evacuation of Dunedin Hospital this morning is understood to be the result of fumes from outside the building entering the hospital's air conditioning system.

Southern fire communications manager Riwai Grace said six engines were sent to the hospital after the Fire Service was alerted at 11.38am.

That was more than would routinely be sent to a hospital callout, he said.

It is understood non-essential staff and members of the public were evacuated from the hospital, but patients and essential staff remained.

Fire Service staff have given the all-clear to return to the building.
