Many Dunedin residents have been reacting to a dramatic lightning strike in the city last night, after a video of the event was posted on social media.
People responding to the post reported hearing and seeing the strike, more than one saying their house was shaken and that power was out for a time.
The video was taken in Hillary St, in Pine Hill, by Dan Rogers, who said the lightning ''struck a transformer next to our house, by looks of it. Was deafening and intense.''
It gave him a huge fright.
''Sorry about the language, but this just put the s***s up me.
''Lightning strike in front of me, Pine Hill, way louder than video gives justice.''
Many commented on the post, including Jaz Hunter, who said it lit up her back yard in lower Brockville.
"When the thunder came, it sounded like a bomb had been dropped in our back yard.''
Tania Stockdale said it woke her and her family up.
"It was awful. Whole night was really horrible and unsettled due to the wild weather.''
Lesley Hayde said she was in her conservatory when the lightning struck.
"Wow . . . it was a hell of a noise, still hailing coming down every half hour.''
The flash was seen on the Taieri, as far away as Allanton.
Resident Kerri Grimsey said the Allanton sky "lit up big time''.
The strike came at the end of a wild day of weather in Dunedin and around the country, as a wintry blast brought heavy snow and high winds that downed trees, closed roads and led to Cook Strait ferry cancellations.
