The largest passenger vessel to visit New Zealand - the 3840-passenger Voyager of the Seas - will arrive next year and is picked to make a stop in Dunedin.

Royal Caribbean Cruises has confirmed the 137,280-tonne vessel will be based out of Sydney for five months from November 2012.

Voyager of the Seas became the world's largest cruise ship when it entered service in November 1999.

It has more than 1500 staterooms.

New Zealand will be included as part of its Australasian voyages, but a list of its scheduled stopovers would be released next month, a company spokesman said.

The Otago Daily Times understands Dunedin is likely to be included.

Royal Caribbean Cruises chief executive Adam Goldstein said "there are clear opportunities in the China and Australia markets, which are key areas for Royal Caribbean International's global development".

The previous largest passenger vessel to visit New Zealand was the Queen Mary 2, which could carry 3056 passengers.
