Soaking in a hot bubble bath, with candles on the side, is traditionally a quiet and relaxing affair - unless the tub has been designed by Ross Hanson.

With a few major modifications, the Dunedin motorcycle enthusiast was able to strap a 250cc quad bike to an old bathtub he saw leaning against a wall at the Green Island landfill recently.

The result was "Tubzilla" - a very noisy bath with four wheels, candles, a shower head and, most importantly, hot running water for up to three people.

Mr Hanson said he built Tubzilla, with help from friends, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Brass Monkey Rally, which was held in Central Otago last weekend.

The contraption is far from practical, let alone roadworthy, and had to be transported to the rally in Oturehua.

But after a few low-speed laps around a frosty farm paddock, it proved to be popular with fellow motorcycle enthusiasts who voted it winner of the rally's Rideable Art Award.

"It rides like a mule - you wouldn't want to go anywhere on it," Mr Hanson said.

"But it certainly got people talking. Everyone was amazed."

Unfortunately, those wanting to buy a Tubzilla of their own are out of luck.

Mr Hanson said it was a "one-off" built for a tilt at the Rideable Art award.

He said Tubzilla would be on display outside MCR Motorcycles on Crawford St, Dunedin, for a couple of weeks, but it would eventually be dismantled into scrap again.
