Sergeant Royden Brown, of Invercargill, watches as Lance-corporal Joseph Jacobs, of Christchurch, runs through a dry fire training drill at the Kensington Army Hall on Saturday.

The drill was part of a larger exercise held for Army Reserve members of Bravo and Alpha companies based in Otago, Southland and Christchurch.

Bravo Company Officer Commanding Captain Duncan McEwan said the reserve soldiers were put through training exercises which tested their mental and physical capabilities in a competitive environment.

"By the end of the day, they are going to be exhausted but these are the fundamental cornerstones of being a soldier in the army," Capt McEwan said.
