A photographic exhibition of the contrasts in Chinese culture opens in Dunedin today.

Dunedin Chinese Garden manager Margo Reid said the exhibition at the Community Gallery, titled ''On the wing of culture - a glimpse of China's cultural regeneration'', included photos from the cultural consul, Zhijie Xu, of the Chinese Consulate in Christchurch. Mr Xu would be attending the opening this afternoon and Dunedin City Council chief executive Paul Orders would make a speech on behalf of the city, she said.

The exhibition revealed different aspects of Chinese culture, contrasting a ''lovely mix'' of the old and the new, like a photo of a 3-D cinema in China displayed near an image of a performance in the Peking Opera.

''The exhibition shows the diversity and celebrates their movement into the 21st century.''

The exhibition would be open for five days.
