The couple from Arizona said the cruise ship stayed in Dunedin to avoid choppy waters.
As a consequence, passengers on the 14-day cruise bypassed planned stops at Dusky Sound and Doubtful Sound but would sail to Milford Sound as planned today before heading to Hobart.
The unexpected night in Dunedin was a "positive" experience, Mr Rutkowski said.
"We didn’t view it as a negative. It’s given us the opportunity to see more stuff," he said.
