Spectrum Photos, which closed its Castle St outlet earlier this year and its McNab St premises last month, has failed to return processed films to customers and pharmacy outlets.
The potential loss of a film containing photographs of a graduation, birthdays and Christmas and Easter memories has upset Eleanor Tempest, who gave her film to a Dunedin pharmacy last month.
The 78-year-old said she was not one to "make a fuss, but this has really got my goat".
"Used films aren't valuable to anyone else, but this is for me and it has my memories."
Although she was resigned to losing her roll of film, she hoped others would not be caught out.
Calls from the Otago Daily Times to the owner of Spectrum Photos, Camerasand Prints, Logan Miller-Robson, went unreturned yesterday.
However, a recorded answer machine message from the company advised customers, "We are sorry to announce that due to illness we have had to close the business. We are in the process of completing all current work and posting this out."
Customers were advised to leave their name, number and query and that someone would call them back in the next few days, the message said.
However, other disgruntled customers, including pharmacies from around the region, have not been contacted by Mr Miller-Robson, despite repeatedly leaving messages and making visits to the now-closed McNab St store.
A McNab St business owner said the shop was cleared out three weeks ago, and there had been visits from customers inquiring as to the status of the company.
