Fair enough as two stalwarts call time

At the age of 79, and after 23 years organising the Flagstaff Union Parish's fair and flower show, Gaynor Earl and Muriel Braid have pulled the plug.

"There's eight of us on the committee who'll be 80 next year and we've had enough." Mrs Earl said.

She and Mrs Braid said they still enjoyed the fair and flower show, which, they said, was always well attended, and would miss it, but it was a lot of hard work to organise.

"We hope someone else will step in, but otherwise this is it," Mrs Braid said.

Because the Halfway Bush fair was such a community event and it was the last one, committee members hired and donned bright clown outfits for the occasion they themed the "community carnival".

Mrs Earl said they were "thrilled" with Saturday's turnout and said they expected the fair to break even, or perhaps even return a slight profit.
