Familiar Otago scenery gets the Netflix movie treatment

Otago's scenic highlights play a starring role in the trailer for a Netflix movie filmed in the region, which is now on YouTube.

The trailer for The Royal Treatment had already racked up hundreds of thousands of views on the video sharing website, and prominently featured spectacular scenery from the province.

It opens on images of Vogel St, in Dunedin, with set decoration and digital enhancements helping it stand in for New York City.

Two of the grand old dames of Dunedin’s heritage also shine.

Larnach Castle stands in for the royal residence of the fictional country of Lavania, with interior scenes featured in the trailer filmed in Olveston House.

Later, scenes from a street party show off Harbour St in Oamaru’s Victorian precinct.

The film stars American actress and singer Laura Marano (Austin & Ally, The Perfect Date) and Egyptian-born Canadian actor Mena Massoud, who starred in Aladdin in 2019.

Film buffs will not have long to wait to see The Royal Treatment.

The film is set to hit Netflix on January 20.
