Family turns out together

It was a family affair at the Mosgiel Anzac service yesterday.

Army captain Keryn Robertson (30) said it was an honour to attend the service accompanied by her grandfather, Jim Robertson (85), and her husband, Sergeant William Atkinson (30).

"It just gets bigger every year."

That recognition from the public had helped soldiers such as her grandfather feel proud about wearing their medals on Anzac Day, she said.

"He used to be very shy about his medals, but that is no longer the case."

Mr Atkinson, a former private with J-Force who once guarded the Japanese Imperial Palace, said he was proud to march alongside his granddaughter and her husband of two years.

"It was very nice to have them here."

While it was the first time the trio had attended an Anzac Day service together, it also marked the first time the Burnham Army Camp-based couple of two years had spent a service together, following various army commitments over the years.

Capt Robertson said it was always a pleasure to return home to Mosgiel, and she especially enjoyed talking with the returned servicemen.

"I just love it. They always tell me, 'Soldiers didn't look that in our day'."
