The Otago University Students' Association is helping those struggling to put food on their table.
It has given nearly $5200 to FoodShare, a Dunedin food rescue organisation.
The money was collected at this year's Dunedin Craft Beer and Food Festival at Forsyth Barr Stadium.
To buy food and beer at the event, attendees had to load money on to wristbands.
At the end of the day, many of those wristbands contained unused funds, which the holders chose to give to the charity.
Association marketing and communications manager Katrina McLennan said it showed the ``hugely generous community spirit'' of those who attended.
FoodShare was founded in 2012 by Deborah Manning, with the aim of reducing food poverty in the community.
The organisation collects surplus food from a growing list of providers and regularly distributes more than 50,000 meals each month.
FoodShare chief executive officer Deborah Manning thanked those who had given their unused funds.
``I'm absolutely delighted. It's going to make a huge difference to FoodShare.
``It will directly help us to deliver more than our target, which is 500,000 meals to the wider Dunedin community in the next year.''
