Fire at Port Otago

A conveyor belt at Port Otago was badly damaged following a fire at the facility yesterday.

Several fire appliances were called to the Port Chalmers scene about 2.40pm and the fire was quickly extinguished.

A Fire Service spokeswoman said there were no injuries and the cause of the fire was not known.

Port Otago general manager commercial Peter Brown said an old woodchip gantry was being decommissioned at the facility.

He believed equipment being used to cut the metal structure may have caused a spark which set the conveyor belt alight.
