A man was treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns after a fire in a flat yesterday afternoon.

The Fire Service was called to the Taieri Rd property just before 2pm, following calls from members of the public reporting flames and dark smoke. One of those who phoned 111 was Tania Donaldson, who was walking nearby when she spotted ''black dense smoke and flames'' coming from the wooden flat.

''People ran out of the top flat, and we could hear someone calling out 'fire, fire'.''

A Fire Service spokesman said three fire appliances were sent to the scene after a fire was reported in the basement room of a flat.

A man was treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns by St John staff outside the property, and was later taken to Dunedin Hospital.

The cause of the fire was being investigated.
