Performing a haka for Te Wiki o te Reo Maori are pupils of Dunedin North Intermediate at the school yesterday.

Deputy principal Salote Rouvi said pupils were encouraged to engage with te reo and Maori culture in a variety of ways this week. To celebrate the week, pupils received tickets to enter a lucky draw whenever they used Maori in the classroom and were encouraged to participate in challenges, dance along to waiata and get creative with art activities.

One of the challenges was identifying significant places in Dunedin from a photo taken at each site with a travelling taonga, a treasured possession in Maori culture, in frame.

Maori Student Council member Lily May Thomson (11) said it was important to acknowledge and preserve the Maori language before it disappeared forever.

Te reo was a wonderful language to have in New Zealand and she was proud to be able to speak some, she said.
