An SUV resting on its side in a ford is inspected by Senior Constable Karren Bye in North Taieri yesterday.

Police were called to Silverstream Valley Rd, near Waiora Scout Camp, about 1.45pm.

Sergeant Kevin Davidson, of Mosgiel, said a man was using the SUV to tow a trailer of firewood.

The man was driving on the causeway next to a ford when he saw another vehicle approaching the causeway, coming the other way.

The SUV driver braked and attempted to go left but overcorrected, and the vehicle plunged over the edge and into the Silver Stream ford.

The trailer remained on the causeway.

The roads in the area were "very slippery".

The driver was not injured.

The SUV was towed out later in the afternoon.

Inquiries into the crash were continuing, Sgt Davidson said.
