People may think they are having fun when playing with fireworks, but serious consequences can occur if they are misused.
Dunedin police have received reports of two incidents involving the misuse of fireworks.
Senior Sergeant Craig Brown said a firework was thrown in a car window on Wednesday afternoon. It landed in a child's empty car seat and the vehicle filled with smoke.
The second incident involved occupants of a moving vehicle shooting fireworks on Highgate, about 5pm yesterday.
Snr Sgt Brown encouraged witnesses to such events to note registration plates, to help police find offenders.
Such deeds carried "pretty hefty fines" because they were "serious offences".
