Flagpoles to be fixture

For nearly 90 years, Anzac Day services have been held at the Dunedin Cenotaph with temporary flagpoles.

But RSA Dunedin president Lox Kellas said that was about to change.

"In the past [for] Anzac Day services, we've had to get temporary flagpoles put up at the Dunedin Cenotaph at 4am.

"So what we're going to do is get three flagpoles that can be placed here in situ for specific events such as Anzac Day, Armistice Day, Battle of Britain Day, or any other significant event that needs to be commemorated in terms of the military history of the country.''

Mr Kellas said RSA Dunedin and the RSA Welfare Trust had been working together to create a more permanent solution as part of this year's celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of RSA.

A small area to the northeast of the cenotaph would be paved, and "sleeves'' would be put in the ground to hold the 7m-high flagpoles.

A plaque would also be put on the site to commemorate the RSA's 100th anniversary.

"I think it will be a fitting tribute to all the past members of the RSA.''

RSA Welfare Trust chairman Paul Galloway said about $8000 had been received from the Bendigo and Otago Community trusts, to build the memorial.

Work was expected to begin next month, and it was hoped it would be completed in time for the official service to celebrate the RSA centenary on September 11, he said.
