A footpath and bank collapsed above the historic White House in Vauxhall this week.

''It happened on Monday and it's being checked twice a day,'' Dunedin City Council policy engineer Pieter Besuijen said yesterday.

''It looks like it will need survey and design work before we can rebuild it.''

Work would start next week, but ''could take a little while'', Mr Besuijen said.

The White House was originally designed as a hotel - the Dandie Dinmont - by Dunedin architects Mason and Wales and was built for William Larnach for 1289 in 1880.

Retired Western Australian school teacher Isobel Nikoloff bought the building in 1970 and in 2006 told the Otago Daily Times she planned to restore it and turn it into an artists' retreat.
