Tatyana Carr's dream of becoming a professional ballet dancer may take a grand jete forward in August, when she competes in a major international ballet competition in Italy.

The 15-year-old decided to pursue her dancing dream in 2015 by moving from Dunedin to one of the world's top ballet schools in Canada - the School of Alberta Ballet, in Calgary.

Her mother, Sara Carr, said the move had been worth it.

''She is one of 10 ballet students from across Canada selected by the Canadian Cecchetti Society to represent the country at the 2017 Cecchetti International Classical Ballet Competition in Florence.''

She said Tatyana was delighted to have been selected.

Tatyana was 3 when she began dancing in Dunedin.

Since then, she has worked with Dunedin dance teachers Caroline Claver, Glenys Scandrett and Robyn Sinclair.

''She's just such a determined person that we knew she could do well at whatever she put her mind to,'' Dr Carr said.

''We're over the moon, amazingly impressed, and so proud because she knew it would take an amazing amount of work and she's made sacrifices on her part to do this.

''This is a great achievement.''

She said major ballet companies around the world would be watching the dancers in the competition, and it would put Tatyana ''on their radar''.

''It will open doors for her.''

Dr Carr said the competition was only held once every three years, and Tatyana would be competing against dancers from Australia, Canada, southern Africa, United Kingdom, United States and Italy.

The students were selected through an audition process, which was overseen by each society, she said.

There are two sections in the competition - junior (14-16) and senior (17-20).

Dr Carr said the dancers must perform a set variation from a list which included well known solos from a range of ballets, such as The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake.

They must also perform a contemporary piece which was original and choreographed for them.
