Free parking outside the Speight's Brewery tap on Rattray St will be reinstated following complaints and suggestions made to the Dunedin City Council.

Four Dunedin city councillors met yesterday to consider about 75 letters received in response to the new parking regime.

The parking strategy working party, comprising Crs Michael Guest, Syd Brown, Andrew Noone and John Bezett, reviewed messages from Dunedin residents compiled by councillors and council staff.

The working party was given the authority to change decisions made during the introduction of the new parking regime.

Cr Guest said the group "discussed principles" and individual changes.

However, further research would be carried out before another meeting tomorrow morning.

Several decisions had been made, but he declined to comment further on the nature of them until they could be released as a package.

Changes made this week included altering the parking zones outside the Leviathan Hotel.

New signs were put up on Tuesday, which now indicated two zones for up to about eight vehicles marked "P5 loading zone" between 9am and 4pm, and were to be used for tour, coach and shuttle buses outside those times.

There were also four pay-and-display machines with a four-hour maximum stay.

Leviathan Hotel owner Peter Laing said he was not happy with the changes.

Buses often needed to park there during the day and now could not.

The council had not spoken to him before making the changes.

"It's totally impractical and unworkable."

Council city environment general manager Tony Avery said there had been changes at the Leviathan and three other hotels, with the parks changed to "mixed zone" after concerns were picked up early on.
