From vintage machinery to children's rides, tug-of-war contests, barrel-riding and wheelbarrow races, the Blueskin Country Fair A&P show proved popular yesterday afternoon - drawing well over 1000 people.

A&P show committee member and Waikouaiti Coast Community Board chairman Alisdair Morrison said the show was about showing off everything that the Blueskin area had to offer.

"The main thing was to have a lot of fun, and we did. It was an absolute blast."

Among the activities on offer was a Noddy train for small children.

Emergency services also had a presence at the show, and they unsuccessfully took on local children in the tug-of-war, along with the TS Nimrod sea cadets from Port Chalmers.

A new addition to the show this year was the "Brutey Pageant", a beauty contest for men, where local businesses could choose to enter a contestant.

Former fireman and A&P show committee member Paul Clements was crowned the "Brutey" after being judged on factors including how knobbly his knees were, and how much hair he had.

Fellow organising committee member Mandy Mayhem-Bullock said the show also featured an apple press, a merry-go-round, clowns, a toy library and an all-day cafe - as well as more traditional children's games, a martial arts display and a "best dressed dog and owner" competition.

The A&P show committee was one of the oldest in the country, at about 150 years old, she said.

In the future, the committee hoped to get a pavilion and maybe a gas barbecue up and running, and they conducted surveys yesterday on what people would like to see.

"I imagine next show date will be the deadline."
