A Big Little Day Out at the Forsyth Barr Stadium turned into a big success, organisers said.

About 500 parents and youngsters flocked to the inaugural event, which aimed to provide an affordable fun day out for youngsters and their families, Plunket's Otago Community Services leader Catherine Caley said.

‘‘The feedback from families was positive,'' Mrs Caley said.

Award-winning Central Otago songwriter and children's author Craig Smith performed his musical ‘‘wonky donkey'' show, and families enjoyed an array of other entertainment, with stalls offered by community groups, she said.

Stadium authorities had made the stadium available free, and entry was by gold coin donation.
