A fundraising event for a cycling link north of Dunedin has propelled the project to within $10,000 of a key target.

The M20 cross-country mountainbiking ride this month raised more than $7400 for the Coastal Communities Cycle Connection.

The full project involves providing an off-road walking and cycling path between Waikouaiti and Karitane, and Warrington and Waitati, connecting through to Port Chalmers.

One key segment is clipping on to a railway bridge under construction that will span the Waikouaiti River.

"We are now only $9000 away from having enough funds to get the preliminary design of the clip-on bridge done, thanks to the incredible amount raised by the M20," connection co-ordinator Emily Cooper said.

This was crucial for creating a safe link between Waikouaiti and Karitane.

The fundraising target for the bridge design work was just over $25,000.

Background work was continuing on the Waitati to Port Chalmers section, Ms Cooper said.

Just over 150 people participated in the April 6 fundraising ride.

Donations for specific sections of the overall project could be made through the Dunedin Tracks and Trails website and a bingo fundraising night would be held at Karitane Hall tonight.
