Any one of the "slightly altered'' Shakespearean plays could be performed over the coming months to help three Dunedin secondary school pupils raise money for their trip to the Globe Theatre in London next year.
King's High School pupil Max Beal, Otago Girls' High School pupil Tui Taiaroa-Smithies and Queen's High School pupil Krystal O'Gorman are among 24 New Zealand secondary school pupils to be selected by the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand to go on the prestigious trip after giving winning performances at the 2017 National Shakespeare Schools Production in Wellington recently.
The trio said there was no greater honour for lovers of Shakespearean theatre than to tread the boards of the Globe Theatre in London.
But it was an expensive exercise and, although the trip was subsidised, they would still need to raise about $8500 each.
To that end, they are considering rounding up fellow Shakespearean actors in the city to perform one of the Bard's plays to help raise money.
The three-week trip (July 6-25) involves acting tuition, workshops and rehearsals at the Globe, before performing a play at the theatre.
Max and Krystal will perform and Tui will work backstage, creating costumes for the production.
All three were looking forward to visiting William Shakespeare's home town, Stratford-upon-Avon.
``It will be really cool to get some context into the place he was living at, and get a taste of the surroundings that inspired his works,'' Max said.
