A large generator at the intersection of St Andrew and George St is supplying power to parts of central Dunedin while maintenance work is carried out on an underground substation.

An Aurora Energy spokesman said the work is scheduled to take two days.

A short planned outage early Wednesday morning allowed crews to connect the generator to provide power, the spokesman said.

A similar scheduled outage would be needed when the maintenance work was complete to disconnect the generator and switch back to the substation.
