Identical twins Abby and Sophie Erwood have a former New Zealand netball representative for courtside support as they compete at the South Island secondary schools netball tournament in Dunedin this week.

The twins' grandmother, Shirley Annan (nee Patrick), was a member of the 1960 New Zealand netball team.

"It was called basketball back when she played," Sophie said.

Mrs Annan was on hand to watch her granddaughters play for the South Otago High School senior A team.

The sisters (15) credit their grandmother with inspiring them to take the sport seriously.

The twins also play hockey, touch, volleyball, athletics and the occasional basketball game.

They see their grandmother as a role model and hope one day to represent New Zealand.

Hailing from a sheep and beef farm between Clydevale and Lawrence, Sophie and Abby - year 11 pupils - say they are very competitive in everything from exams to athletics.

"[We are] always trying to beat each other at everything we do. Probably netball's the only sport we can't compete in," Abby said.

This is because Sophie, a goal shoot, and Abby, a goal keep, work at opposite ends of the court. Opponents have nicknamed the girls the Twin Towers.

The two say they have never used their identical appearance to secretly switch bibs.

"We've considered it so many times," Abby admitted.

"We've just never quite done it," Sophie said.
