The South's young vocal talent rang through the University of Otago's Marama Hall yesterday as 30 pupils competed in the annual New Zealand Association of Teachers of Singing (Newzats) vocal competition.

The contest was split into two concerts, the first for the 14 juniors (years 9 and 10) and the second for the 16 seniors (years 11-13). All singers hailed from the South and were pupils of Newzats teachers.

About 130 people attended the two concerts, in which each singer performed two contrasting songs backed by an accompanist.

Auckland singer, teacher and conductor Lachlan Craig, who judged the contest, said the singing had been of a high standard, with all competitors being well prepared and very competent.
