Hospital may add shops

More shops may be established in Dunedin Hospital foyer to provide services to patients, staff and visitors, and boost Otago District Health Board funds.

In a report to be tabled at the board's hospital advisory committee on Tuesday, diagnostic and support services group manager Sonja Dillon said proposals will be sought from independently owned and operated outlets for florist, gift and general supplies and an alternative food and beverage outlet.

The potential for limited access to banking services would also be explored.

A recent market valuation of the foyer indicated that both the high volume of foot traffic and the available space meant there was retail value in the space available.

At the moment, the only shop is Muffin Break. Access to a gift shop and an ATM were among the most frequent questions asked by visitors.

Ms Dillon said it was important any potential user of the space was respectful of the board's core business and would provide products and services reflecting the Healthy Eating, Healthy Action requirements of the Ministry of Health.

A focus group which has been established to create a plan for the next 10 years for the area is expected to report to the committee by the end of March.
