A cool start and a lack of wind contributed to smoggy conditions in Northeast Valley, Dunedin, at 9am yesterday.

Although smog can often be seen in the city during colder conditions, Otago Regional Council figures show that PM10 (air particulate) levels have dropped significantly in recent years.

There were  no breaches of the national environmental standard for air quality in Dunedin last year.
