Information sought on police station changes

The Chalmers Community Board wants to know more about plans to change the status of the Port Chalmers police station.

The new area commander for Dunedin-Clutha, Inspector Greg Sparrow, said he would attend the board's next meeting on November 16. The change was administrative and the public would not notice, he said.

"There should be no loss of service to the public."

Police are considering changing the station's status from a rural two-person station to a patrol base, which means staff could lose rural responder allowances.

Insp Sparrow said since he only started his role this month, and the Port Chalmers process was started by his predecessor, Insp Dave Campbell, he was still familiarising himself with the issue.

The minutes of the community board's October meeting said board members wanted to know more about the status change, officers' hours of work and implications for the community.
