An appreciative audience supported the Oamaru Chorale’s second visit to Dunedin to perform the music of little-known classical composer Marianna Martines.
The concert began with an elegant performance of Martines’ Keyboard Sonata in G Major played by pianist Christine Turner. The three movements are widely contrasting and Turner gave each one its own characteristic musical quality. The allegro brillante showcased sensitively shaped scalic passages and well-judged dynamic contrasts. The andante revealed Turner’s ability to play with classical grace, and the final movement, allegro assai, brimmed with energy from the very start.
The main work on the programme was Martines’ Mass No 1.
The Oamaru Chorale is a group of 16 singers who have obviously been well trained, as their musical intent was always obvious, although at times technical finesse was lacking. Conducted with exemplary precision by David Beattie and stylishly accompanied on the piano by Ron Newton, it was apparent that the singers thoroughly enjoyed bringing this music to life.
The solo quartet of Ameera Woods, Eva Stein, Teddy Finney Waters and Richard Holland was well-balanced, although Holland’s bass needed more presence in the sound.
The Kyrie opened strongly. The long introduction to the Gloria, sensitively played by Newton, set the scene for a dramatic choral entry. The solo trio (Woods, Stein and Finney Waters) in the Quoniam tu solo sanctus was a highlight. The intent in the Et vitam venturi saeculi section of the Credo showcased the Chorale’s textural understanding. The extended duet for Woods and Stein in the Benedictus was also a highlight with both voices well-matched. The final Agnus Dei was sung with sensitive dynamics, bringing this interesting concert to a close.
As Beattie said: "My passion is bringing the music of this neglected composer to life". Thank goodness for his passion. The music of Martines deserves a wider stage.
