A police spokeswoman said the vehicles collided at the intersection of Barnes Dr and State Highway 1, in Caversham, before one of them hit a pole, about 11.20am.

A St John spokesman said one person had serious injuries and was trapped in their vehicle.

They had to be freed by emergency services workers before being taken by ambulance to Dunedin Hospital.

A person from the other vehicle was also taken to the hospital in a moderate condition.

The road was closed around the crash site for a time, and southbound traffic was backed up along the Southern Motorway.

Diversions were put in place for a short time.
