Ava Schaumann (6), of Dunedin, enjoys taking part in an Old-Fashioned Fun and Games session at the Glenfalloch Gardens, Dunedin, yesterday.

"Very tiring, but fun,'' was her verdict on the sack race.

Her mother, Yolanda Schaumann, said the games were "a great idea, introducing the children to games seldom played anymore'' and were "good old-fashioned fun''.

Glenfalloch garden manager Alan Funnell said the games, including an egg-and-spoon race and an obstacle course, would continue in 45-minute sessions, running daily on the hour, between 10am until 3pm until and including Sunday.

The games, charged at $10 per child, encouraged youngsters to undertake some physical exercise that boosted their balance and hand-eye co-ordination.

Some events, such as the three-legged race, also helped children learn how to succeed through teamwork.

The games also aimed to raise community awareness, and ``we just want to get more people into the garden''.

Fifty children, aged 5-12, had also taken part in games activities over a much shorter period last January.

The games started quietly yesterday, but Mr Funnell said he would like to see the sessions full throughout the day - "kids climbing things, running around''.
