Keen on jab: ‘I think it’s very important’

It was a big day at Summerset at Bishopscourt yesterday ... mahjong, darts and Covid-19 vaccinations.

Residents lined up in the Divine Cafe from 10am, waiting to receive the second of their two injections, those doses taking the southern region closer to its target to fully vaccinate all aged-care residents by next week.

Glenys Webber was first in line, and very keen to get her shot.

"I had no doubts about it — I think it’s very important," she said.

"We have a daughter in Sydney, who we usually visit once a year, and a son in London, so if we want to travel again we have to get it done."

Summerset at Bishopscourt is one of several retirement villages and rest-homes where Roslyn Pharmacy has been contracted to deliver an on-site vaccination service.

Village manager Mark Ryan said several residents had already received their vaccinations at the Southern District Health Board’s central city vaccination clinic, but about 55 of the village’s 111 residents had opted for the ease and convenience of getting their jabs at home.

"We expect at least 90% of residents will be fully vaccinated."

Roslyn Pharmacy immunisation co-ordinator Alex Svejkar said the pharmacy had done vaccinations for six rest-homes and two disability service providers.

"We were affected by the vaccine shortage a little bit, but we receive a weekly allocation and we have been able to manage that pretty well.

"We’re looking forward to next month, when we will be starting an on-site clinic at Roslyn Pharmacy."

Ministry of Health statistics show the SDHB vaccine rollout is 14% ahead of schedule, the DHB having administered 11,538 more vaccinations than planned as of Sunday.

Just over 40,000 southerners had received both their Covid-19 vaccinations, and 55,843 had received a single shot.

SDHB vaccine rollout incident controller Hamish Brown said most aged-care residents in the district had received their second vaccine dose, and all 3200 residents should be fully vaccinated by July 21.

"Over the past few weeks, we have been vaccinating around 7000 people per week, and from next week, we will start to see our supply increase," Mr Brown said.

"This means we’ll commence a significant ramping up of the programme across the district, and we will see more general practices and pharmacies coming on board across the district."

More than 30 vaccination clinics were operating across the SDHB district, and he expected about 120 providers would be delivering injections at the peak of the rollout.

"Our goal is that no-one should have to travel more than one hour to a vaccination centre ... We have been texting those in group 3, and will be sending letters over the next week to invite people in this group to book in to get vaccinated."
