Lake-research funding bid

University of Otago scientists have made a bid for funding from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to support research on sustaining Otago's ''Southern Great Lakes''.

A report tabled at a recent meeting of the Otago Regional Council's technical committee noted the funding application had been made by Catchments Otago, an Otago University collaborative research theme.

The bid was titled ''Sustaining the Southern Great Lakes: integrating research and management for sustainable ecosystems, communities and economies''.

The report, by council engineering, hazards and science director Gavin Palmer, said the bid was being made in collaboration with other stakeholders including regional councils.

It aimed to gather knowledge required to underpin ''informed management'' of the lakes.

Council chairman Stephen Woodhead said a collaborative approach was crucial in responding to challenges facing the lakes.

The report also said the council had spent or committed $112,000 to investigating and managing the effects of lake snow.
