It might have seemed like ''the runt of the litter'' at the time, but for Dunedin man John Somerfield the only ticket left in a raffle book on Saturday was a lucky one.

The $10 ticket won Mr Somerfield a fully-furnished and decorated sleep-out worth more than $10,000.

Mr Somerfield (left) is pictured at Otago Polytechnic L Block with Callum Procter, of Dunedin radio station The Hits, in front of the ''Bloke's sleep-out'' which Mr Procter was responsible for designing and ''kitting out'' after its construction.

The sleep-out was one of two designed and built by Otago Polytechnic students and staff with materials supplied by Justin Macready, from Placemakers Dunedin, and many other local businesses.

Both sleep-outs were raffled for charity at the Otago Daily Times and Dunedin Venues Great Home and Living Show at the weekend, the proceeds being shared equally by the Cancer Society and the Otago Community Hospice.

''We really need what we've won,'' Mr Somerfield said yesterday.

With a 16-year-old drum-playing son and a 12-year-old daughter, he and his wife would find the much-needed extra space a welcome addition to their small home.

And Mr Procter said it was ''great'' the sleep-out was going to a good home.

The other sleep-out was won by Alexandra woman Carol Johnston who, like Mr Somerfield, was telephoned at home on Sunday and given the good news.
