The Villa Education Trust announced yesterday the 35-year-old was now the community liaison manager for the trust's Middle School West Auckland.
His responsibilities include overseeing the years 7-10 school's relationships with Pasifika and Maori children, their families and various community organisations, in a bid to knock down any perceived barriers to academic success.
Mr Levi said he was delighted with the new role.
''Education is important to the future of our most vulnerable, and to help and serve these communities is one [thing] I am very passionate about.''
The former Logan Park and Otago Boys' High School pupil has gone on to gain a BA and an MA from the University of Otago, and has more recently been working in the tertiary education sector in South Auckland.
Trust academic adviser Alwyn Poole said Mr Levi brought many of the educational, personal and aspirational aspects the trust was looking for.
''He speaks four languages, has wide interests and holds high ideals for children and young people.''
Until 2012, Mr Levi's career was in professional rugby when he played for the Highlanders, the Otago NPC team and the Tasman Makos, as well as clubs in Japan and Britain.
The peak of his career was captaining Manu Samoa and playing for his national team from 2008-11, including the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand.
Mr Levi will begin his new role early next month and the school will officially open in term one next year.
Middle School West Auckland is one of four new partnership schools to be opened in 2015.
It will be a sister school to the thriving South Auckland Middle School which began in February this year.
