A new section of rail line has been added just south of the Mosgiel train station as part of a new signalling system between Dunedin and Wingatui.

The ''siding'' was installed in April when KiwiRail began relocating a ballast storage pit from Green Island, KiwiRail senior communications adviser David Miller said.

The new signalling system would allow KiwiRail to ''run more trains and improve the efficiency on that part of the network for our customers'', Mr Miller said.

A railway siding is a low-speed section of track that allows for passing, marshalling, storing, stabling and loading and unloading of carriages.
