Installing a ground-level crossing linking Dunedin's central city with the harbourside is to be investigated by the Dunedin City Council.
A motion from Cr David Benson-Pope calling on staff to investigate with Kiwirail having such a crossing next to the Chinese Garden was unanimously approved at yesterday's annual plan deliberations.
Cr Benson-Pope said a ground-level crossing could be a cheaper alternative to building a bridge or underground access.
"I keep coming back to this because it seems doable,'' he said.
Cr Lee Vandervis said he ``wholeheartedly'' agreed with the idea, which would provide "huge benefits'' for everyone in the city and pave the way for a revitalised harbourside area.
