Long wait unlikely: GP

Dunedin Urgent Doctors and Accident Centre is coping with the busy holiday season and there is no indication patients are suffering unreasonable wait times, GP Dr Kim Maiai says.

The Otago Daily Times yesterday spoke to a woman, who did not wish to be named, who waited about three hours to see a doctor on Wednesday.

She described the centre as "bedlam" and said another patient waited about four hours.

She said staff were doing their best, and seemed run off their feet.

Dr Maiai said that to his knowledge, the practice was meeting its target of seeing people within a maximum time of two hours.

"To be honest, I'd be surprised if someone waited that long [three hours]."

As usual for the time of year, the centre was busier this week, both because some Dunedin medical centres remain closed for the festive season, and an influx of visitors to the city.

At other times of the year patients were generally seen within one hour, Dr Maiai said.
