It started with a trial by jury and will end this weekend.

Really Authentic Gilbert and Sullivan Performance Trust members Michael Andrewes, Ronald Caldwell, John Drummond, Colin Gibson and Dave Solomon were presented with gold awards on Monday night for taking part in a unique opera odyssey.

The group has appeared in every production since the trust was established in Dunedin in 2001 to perform the 13 surviving Gilbert and Sullivan operas in chronological order and an authentic style.

The project started in 2002 with Trial by Jury and will finish on Friday with The Grand Duke.

"A lot of people said we were mad. It hadn't been done in this form before: to start at the beginning and work through to the end," trustee Michael Andrewes said. "It's very satisfying to achieve it. It has been a very special project and a one-off," he said.

Silver awards were also presented to 34 members who had performed in at least six productions.
