Major science and technology conference to be held in city

A major international science conference has been confirmed for Dunedin.

More than 500 delegates from around the world will gather in the city for the 2018 Public Communication of Science and Technology Conference.

The event, to be hosted by the University of Otago Centre for Science and Communication, with support from Tourism New Zealand and Tourism Dunedin, will inject an estimated $1.7 million into the New Zealand economy.

''Dunedin is excited to host this auspicious international conference,'' Tourism Dunedin chief executive Hamish Saxton said yesterday.

''Events such as this are sound recognition of the city's reputation as a knowledge centre and the acknowledgement of the University of Otago's reputation on the world stage''.

The city was seeing the benefits of its investment in business events, particularly the refurbishment of the Dunedin Centre and Town Hall, he said.
