An elderly man injured in a Port Chalmers house fire later died.

Firefighters dragged the 84-year-old from the burning council flat in Currie Court on June 25.

He was taken to Dunedin Hospital in a critical condition with severe burns.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand investigator Mark Bredenbeck said it was still unclear if the man’s death was a direct result of the fire.
