A Dunedin man spent last night in police custody after a high-speed chase near Mosgiel involving a a stolen car, just days after he was bailed on similar alleged offending.

The 23-year-old man was charged with unlawful taking, dangerous driving and failing to stop after accelerating to over 150kmh as he tried to shake off police, Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said.

A Peugeot 206, which was earlier reported stolen by its owner, was spotted by police

heading north on Maungatua Rd, near Berwick, about 4.20pm yesterday.

"He failed to stop, went through Outram and down State Highway 87 towards Mosgiel and got up to 150kmh,'' Snr Sgt Benn said.

Other police units were called to help in the chase.

The Peugeot got stuck behind a logging truck on SH87 and pulled over in Gordon Rd shortly after entering Mosgiel.

The man was in custody last night, as he was already on bail in relation to similar charges earlier this year.

The man was bailed only days earlier on a charge of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, Snr Sgt Benn said.

He will appear in the Dunedin District Court this morning.
