Otago Peninsula Community Board has supported the move to notify providers of maps to GPS manufacturers of problem routes on the peninsula.
Seven routes had been identified by the council, all of which the board supported at its meeting yesterday.
Board member Senior Constable Lox Kellas said they were happy for the information to go forward and was sure the publicity would mean "more would come to light".
Dunedin City Council senior traffic engineer Ron Minnema said once the list was definitive the roads in question would be given to the geographic information services staff at council to develop warnings such as "no exit" which would pop up when drivers headed for those roads.
That information would then be forwarded to map providers so when GPS suppliers updated their maps that information would be available, he said.
"It's an ongoing issue and not just confined to the peninsula."
The council acted when issues were brought to its attention.
