Thirty-five Christmas cakes, 300 Christmas truffles, 290 slices of shortbread and hundreds of Christmas cake-pops sounds like the Christmas wishlist of some very hungry elves.

It was the festive offering of Mosgiel woman Margaret Crawford-Warden, who spent more than a month baking and decorating the goodies to raise money for charity.

Mrs Crawford-Warden, a member of the congregation at the East Taieri Church, said she wanted to help people who did not have as much as others might at Christmas.

A professional cake decorator for 37 years, it struck her that she could use her skills for good.

She started on November 3 and by last week had baked, iced and wrapped more than 600 items to sell at the Mosgiel market day.

''It took me a month working seven days a week, and a very good husband. He [Russell] thought I was nuts, but I couldn't have done it without him.''

Mrs Crawford-Warden donated $430, the profit from her efforts, to the Mosgiel Community Food Bank yesterday. Food bank co-ordinator Michelle Kerr said the donation was appreciated, and contributed to a record take for the food bank. ''The more we get, the more we give, and that's what it's all about.''
