Dunedin councillors want more information before they decide whether ideas from a brainstorming event are worth backing to the tune of $160,000.

The merits of allocating the sum were debated at a Dunedin City Council meeting this week, but councillors decided they did not yet know enough about the leading projects to make a call.

Three projects from the Great Dunedin Brainstorm had been put forward to receive money from the council’s Covid-19 Support Fund.

One, led by a University of Otago lecturer, was designed to improve diversity in the construction workforce.

Another would support development of film projects.

A third, led by Otago Polytechnic staff, would target tertiary graduates whose immediate plans had been disrupted by Covid-19.

Councillors were told this would include "development of the soft skills important for future employment, and the creation of a sense of purpose in uncertain times through engagement with the wider community".

Lack of detail about the projects prompted councillors to postpone further consideration of whether they were worthy of ratepayer funding.
