Dunedin is experiencing a growth in young people taking up sewing, which is encouraging for the future of fashion, Maria Brett says.

Ms Brett, who works at The Fabric Store, said making your own garments was a chance to ''express individuality'' as well as having clothing that was unique.

''It's more exciting to own something that is really unique . . . individual. ''That's what iD's about - doing something a bit different. It is celebrating that Dunedin difference.''

Ms Brett said it was good to see young people taking an interest in sewing and that they enjoyed working with different materials. The Fabric Store will unveil its 2015 winter collection as part of iD Dunedin Fashion Week, which starts on Monday.

''The store gives people an option to use fabric to make things that they can't buy,'' she said.

Ms Brett said iD was an exciting week for fashion.

''We are really busy during iD. It doesn't hit us until the week of the event. There are so many more people we see that are focused on fashion. iD is for everyone.''

The Fabric Store will launch its 2015 winter collection on April 22.
