A prominent central city public artwork out of commission since late September should be back spinning in the next two weeks.

Components of Derek Ball's kinetic sculpture outside the Dunedin City Library are being replaced after they were found to be wearing out.

Dunedin City Council property services group manager David Bainbridge said in consultation with Mr Ball, the ball bearings and acrylic sections and were being replaced with fibreglass and repainted, so they lasted.

Taken down at the end of September, the sculpture was expected to be back up by December 20, Mr Bainbridge said.

The repairs were expected to cost between $2500 and $3000, he said.

Last year, the sculpture had to be repainted after the council painted it with a gloss finish, causing a strobing effect when sunlight reflected off it.
